I have read 1st and 3rd vols. of French edition. The obscenity of surface is indescribable. Nothing could be less pornographical. It fills me with a kind of metaphysical ecstasy. The composition is extraordi­nary, as rigorous as Dante’s. If the dispassionate statement of 600 ‘passions’ is Puritan and a complete absence of satire juvenalesque, then it is, as you say, puritanical and juvenalesque.
