Confronting the unconscious, instead of involving a realisation that one is a puppet dancing on the end of personal-historical strings held firmly in the grasp of a libidinal puppet master, might very well amount to coming face-to-face with an abyssal autonomy, an abyssal groundlessness situated as the extimate kernel of ones subjective existence. Paraphrasing Freud (” the normal man is not only far more immoral than he believes but also far more moral than he knows”), one could say that normal man is not only far more determined than he believes but also far freer than he knows.
