Freud writes in Civilization and Its Discontents that everything that is transferred from jouissance to prohibition gives rise to the increasing strengthening of prohibition. Whoever attempts to submit to the moral law sees the demands of his superego grow increasingly meticulous and increasingly cruel. Why isn’t it the same in the other direction?
